Glasgow LHCb Group
Plan View of LHCb Detector
Group Members:
Activities
- The group is currently involved in the construction of the Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors
and the Vertex Locator (VELO) of LHCb in conjunction with other
institutes in LHCb.
- Glasgow hardware responsibilities: construction of a production test
facility to test Hybrid Photodiode performance, testing novel radiation hard silicon
detectors for the LHCb VELO.
- Study of an alignment system for the LHCb RICH detectors.
- Software for the VELO detector.
- Monte Carlo production of LHCb physics events at the
Scotgrid facility being built at the University
of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh.
- Applications of e-science and the Grid for the LHCb software.
- Study of CP violations using the LHCb data set.

Students
-
PhD studentships on LHCb poster.
- There exist great opportunities for students pursuing a PhD in the LHCb
group.
- Possible topics of study include:
- Characterization and testing of hybrid photodiodes for the
RICH detectors;
- Study of the alignment of the RICH detectors within LHCb;
- Monitoring Cherenkov gas properties using spectroscopic
and ultrasound techniques;
- VELO software, including VELO alignment;
- Software development using the C++ language, such as
simulation of the detector with the GEANT4 package and
object orientated reconstruction software;
- E-science and Grid applications for LHCb;
- Physics analysis of CP-violating decays of B-mesons.
- Other possibilities can be further discussed with Dr Paul Soler and Dr Chris Parkes.
