Personal Response System

Introduction

Infra-red student handsets are available for use in the Physics and Astronomy department. These allow lecturers to "ask the audience" questions (typically multiple choice) during their presentations and receive instant feedback. The student responses are shown as a bar (or pie) chart.

Equipment

The Physics and Astronomy department has purchased:

  • 200 handsets
  • Five receivers permanently wired in lecture room 257
  • Two receivers (and tripods for mounting) for use in other rooms
  • Additional receivers are being installed in lecture room 222 during its refitting in summer 2006
  • Each handset has the digits zero to nine, and a low or high confidence button.
The receivers plug into a USB port on your computer.
Information on the equipment is available from the suppliers web site

Each handset has a unique identifier which is printed on a label on the reverse of the handset - it is the last three digits of this that is displayed by the software when voting.

    Software

The software is compatible with powerpoint and is already installed on the computer in lecture theatre 257 or can be downloaded onto your laptop.
The software is available for Windows PCs and Macs.
    Install Windows Software
    Install Macintosh Software
Please consult Mark Kille in the first year lab if you have any further queries.

    Multiple Choice Questions

Y&F11 - A bank of ready prepared powerpoint questions has been obtained from the publishers of the first year textbook 'University Physics 11th Edition' Young & Freedman'. There are typically 5-10 questions per chapter

Physics Olympiad - a good source of general physics MCQs

    Bookings

The handsets and mobile receivers are kept in room 223.
Please contact Mark Kille (m.kille@physics.gla.ac.uk), the first year laboratory technician, to make a booking for use of the physics and astronomy equipment.
In case of multiple bookings, please contact Chris Mitchell to check the availabilty of equipment in other departments.
